Discover Tumalo Falls Central Oregons Must See Waterfall

TLC would have certainly changed their tune if they had visited Central Oregon. The area’s wild and wonderful wilderness is full of wow-worthy waterfalls that are easy to find and easier to enjoy (with little chasing required). Tumalo Falls is the star of this cascading scene, and it’s just a stone’s throw away from our cozy vacation rentals in Deschutes National Forest. If you’re ready to chase waterfalls on an epic outdoor adventure, here’s what you need to know about Tumalo Falls: what it is, how to get there, and why it’s a must-see on your Sisters vacation itinerary.

What is Tumalo Falls?

If you’re looking for dramatics, Tumalo Falls is sure to deliver. This 97-foot waterfall plunges into the pool below at a near-vertical drop, making it the tallest (and steepest) natural waterfall in the area. The glacier-fed falls are located at the heart of Deschutes National Forest, in a valley lined with lodgepole pine, stately aspens, and clear mountain creeks. This majestic cascade is a popular spot for hikers, photographers, and nature lovers, offering an unforgettable experience in the heart of Central Oregon’s wilderness. And the best part? You don’t need to be a seasoned hiker to experience it.

Why is Tumalo Falls a Must-See

What sets Tumalo Falls apart is its stunning beauty and accessibility. The waterfall plunges dramatically over a cliff, creating a picturesque scene that looks straight out of a nature documentary. The surrounding area is lush with forests, wildflowers, and scenic viewpoints, making it a perfect backdrop for your Instagram feed (and yes, you will get all the likes). Plus, it’s a great place to cool off on a hot summer day; just don’t try to swim – it’s cold!

Hiking to Tumalo Falls

Don’t let the word “hike” scare you off. Getting to Tumalo Falls is a breeze, even for families with little ones. Here are some of the most popular ways to access the area:

  • Tumalo Falls Day Use Area. During the summer (June - October), this day use area in Deschutes National Forest is the easiest path to the falls. There’s a short, paved trail right off the parking lot that leads you to a viewing platform with a perfect perspective of the falls. This is a great option for small children or visitors who aren’t up for a forest hike.

  • If you’re feeling adventurous, take the short Tumalo Falls Trailhead to the Upper Viewpoint. This steep but short hike leads to an overlook that offers a breathtaking top-down view of the falls and a wide panoramic scene of Tumalo Creek valley.

  • Tumalo Falls Loop is a moderate 7-mile hike that follows Tumalo Creek along the North Fork Trail and makes a scenic loop through lush forest dotted with hidden waterfalls, mountain meadows, creek-fed valleys and volcanic cliffs. You can shorten the trail by turning around at Double Falls and returning to the trailhead (approx. 2 miles out and back.)

Things to Know Before You Go

  • There is a $5 day use fee to park and use the Tumalo Falls Day Area; you can purchase it online here or at the parking gate. You can also use a local recreation pass.

  • There is a 27-foot vehicle length limit at the trailhead.

  • There is a restroom and picnic areas at the trailhead, but no running water. Please pack appropriately.

  • When to visit: The waterfall is accessible year-round, but the best time to visit is during the spring and early summer when the snowmelt makes the falls particularly powerful. Early mornings or weekdays are ideal to avoid crowds. Forest Service Road 4603 is closed to motorized vehicles during the winter season, but you can ski or snowshoe to the trailhead.

  • Wear good hiking shoes: The trail can be muddy and slippery in spots.

  • Respect the environment: Leave no trace and stay on designated trails.
